Equal splits ignore real differences between rooms. If one roommate has a larger room, a private bathroom, or a parking spot, they're getting more value for the same price. A weighted split based on what each room actually offers is fairer to everyone — and harder to argue with.
An envy-free split is one where no roommate would prefer to swap rooms and payments with anyone else. It's a concept from fair division theory. RoomTally's algorithm is designed to produce this outcome by pricing each room according to its actual value — size, bathroom access, and parking — rather than treating all rooms as identical.
Half of the total rent is distributed proportionally by room size. If your room is 200 sq ft out of 600 sq ft total, you pay one-third of the size-based pool. You can enter exact square footage or use RoomTally's size estimates (XS through XL) if you don't know the exact dimensions.
Ensuite means the bathroom is private to your room — you pay a small premium for that exclusivity. Hallway private means you share with one or two specific roommates. Guest-accessible means the bathroom is also used by visitors or people passing through common areas — in that case you receive a small discount. The adjustments are zero-sum: any premium one room pays is distributed as discounts to the others.
No. RoomTally requires no login and stores nothing on a server. Your configuration is encoded in a URL that you can bookmark or share. All calculations happen in your browser. When your roommates open your shared link, everything is recalculated fresh on their device from the URL parameters.
Yes. After your rent split is calculated, RoomTally lets you add a monthly utilities total. Each roommate's utility share is weighted by their usage level — standard or high. High usage applies to roommates who work from home, charge an EV, or generally use more power than others. Bookmark your shared link and update the utility amount each month.
